Five Ways to Make Your BBQ Event Eco-Friendly

Are you passionate about barbecuing or grilling during the warm summer months?  Do you enjoy the idea of being eco-friendly, but aren’t sure how to combine your love for the green life with your zeal for great tasting, barbecued foods?  Look no further—we have the guide to barbecuing and grilling the green way.

Mix some veggies into that barbecue mix.

While you and your guests may be expecting to cook up some traditional barbecue foods, such as ribs, steaks, burgers, or hotdogs, be aware that there are green alternatives to add in.  First and foremost, try to purchase organic, grass-fed meats from farms where only organic and sustainable practices are used when raising livestock. Also, add some fruit and vegetables skewers to the menu as an eco-friendly side dish.  Before grilling them, marinate the fruits and vegetable skewers in a variety of different organic marinades for variety.

Grill or barbecue responsibly.

Ideally speaking, you have a solar-powered oven or a hybrid grill perched on your patio ready for that gathering you’re about to have.  If you’re less eco-friendly in the grill department, choose a grill made of cast iron or stainless steel.  Cast iron and stainless steel grills are non-toxic at all temperatures, keeping your food safe and sustainable. Typically like the smoky, wood chip flavor?  We have a green option for that!  Purchase and use the sustainable alternative: bamboo charcoalRegular charcoal gives off a significant amount of carbon monoxide, but bamboo charcoal has several good properties—it gives off a good flavor, has a high mineral content, and absorbs harmful substances in its surroundings.  Also, when grilling, make the environmentally-cautious choice to use lighter fluids sparingly to reduce contaminants and VOC emissions.

Drink eco-friendly or locally-brewed beverages.

What’s a barbeque without a good beer in hand?  While you may have your favorites when it comes to the beverages, it might be time to try something sustainable and new.  There are a large variety of eco-friendly beers brewed daily that taste just as good and are created by companies that (The Daily Green has the scoop on environmentally-friendly, organic beers and the green-conscious companies that create them!).  Not ready to make the leap to going green in your beer choices?  At least make an environmentally-conscious decision to choose a beer brewed at a local brewery.  The more local the beer, the less carbon emissions made getting that beer to you!

Buy local whenever possible.

No matter what else you do at your gathering, do as much of your purchasing as possible buying locally grown and produced goods, preferably the organic or sustainable kindsBuying local means less carbon emissions with less travel required for shipment, and frequenting local businesses promotes the local economy.

Reduce, reuse, recycle!

Use sustainable goods at your party, including biodegradable paper plates, cups, eating utensils, toilet paper, paper towel, and more.  In addition, stock up on biodegradable, eco-friendly dish soap for your dish washing needs, biodegradable hand soap for the bathrooms, and biodegradable trash bags for clean up purposes.  Livestrong.com has a full list of sustainable, biodegradable materials that can be purchased to make your home or event a little more eco-friendly. Have recycling containers labeled and ready for recycling cans, paper and cardboard, bottles, plastics, and food scraps—if the containers are there and at the ready, people will separate out their trash!  Decorate your party with reusable cloth tablecloths, centerpieces of organic or locally-grown flowers, and all-natural candles.  For more ideas, check out the green decorating tips at the website Green Your.

3 Tips to an Eco-Friendly Mother’s Day

  1. Make paper flowers!  Mother’s Day flowers are a classic Mother’s Day gift, but real flowers are so expensive!  Plus, anyone can drop in their local grocery store and pick up a dozen roses, but making flowers is a craft that takes time and will last forever!  Paper flowers or tissue flowers may seem more harmful to the environment because they use papera natural resource that affects our world’s forests.  You can make paper crafts flowers out of almost anything, not just fresh sheets of paper!  Try up-cycling an old magazine, old book or even a phonebook to make your bouquet of paper flowers.  There are several great craft websites that teach you how to make various forms of origami paper flowers like weddingchicks.com (paper flowers make for a great alternative to wedding flowers!), bloom4ever.com, and tipnut.com
  2. Send an e-card!  Mother’s Day cards with quotes about Mother’s Day are another Mother’s Day classic.  Unlike a paper flower, a Mother’s Day card doesn’t often make for a great display piece past the week or so after the holiday.  Holiday cards are often thrown away after they are read, unless they are aesthetically pleasing cards or really, really funny cards.  Try sending a free online e-card instead!  This way your mother can re-read your Mother’s Day card whenever she wants a pick me up right from her e-mail inboxHallmark e-cards have a vast variety of both free e-cards and paid for e-cards, and a wide range of serious Mother’s Day card messages and funny Mother’s Day messages.
  3. Eat local food!  While food is an important part of most holidays, there is nothing quite as celebrated as a Mother’s Day brunch!  Whether you’re cooking your mom breakfast in bed, or going out to a restaurant to eat, make sure to support local business.  If you’re cooking, get your ingredients from your local farmer’s market or at least the organic section of your local grocery store.  If you’re not the greatest cook and plan to head out on the town for Mother’s Day, try supporting a local restaurant rather than a chain of franchised restaurants.

If you’re completely lost as to what to get your mother for Mother’s Day, we can help you out!  We’ve got Mother’s Day gift guides for all types of price ranges:

5 Tips for an Eco-Friendly Cinco De Mayo

Feliz (that’s “happy” in Spanish) de Cinco de Mayo!  May 5th is a day to celebrate Mexican Independence!   If you’re not Mexican, it’s just a good excuse to eat delicious Mexican food and celebrate life with family and friends.

Like most holiday celebrations, there’s always room to opt for more eco-friendly choices.  So, we’ve put together a short list of ways to go green for Mexican Independence Day!

  1.  Drink local beer!  It’s common to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Mexican beer brands like Corona, Dos Equis, and Negra ModeloWhile these beer brands make up some of the best Mexican beer, supporting local breweries is an easy, fun way to go green.  It might not be the most authentic way to celebrate the 5th of May, but it is one of the most environmentally conscious.
  2. Opt for organic tequila or Margarita mix! Tres Agaves has USDA certified organic Margarita Mix – perfect for a blended lime refreshment to wash down your chips and salsa.
  3. Use grass-fed ground beef!  What’s an authentic fiesta without some taco-seasoned ground beef?  To read more about the environmental benefits of grass farming, check out Eat Wild.com and read up on grass-fed meat facts, tips, and where to find grass-fed meat in Illinois.
  4. Eat All-Natural Chips and SalsaThat’s Caring offers All-Natural Chips and Salsa gift baskets by Rick Bayless’ brand of authentic Mexican food, Frontera.  Not only is eating all-natural food better for your body, but it’s an easy way to help the environment!
  5. Decorate Green!  Sure, the Mexican Flag has red and white in it too, but we’re talking about leaving behind the piñatas and paper streamers for natural bursts of color and decoration.  Food itself can be beautifully plated for Cinco de Mayo party décor.  Use flowers and Italian lights to liven up your fiesta ambiance.  Plus, you can give the flowers away as party favors when the party is over!

If you throw a Cinco de Mayo fiesta this weekend and use any of these eco-friendly tips – let us know!  We’d love to hear more about how you celebrated the 5th of May in a green way!

A Different Kind of Green

This St. Patrick’s Day, don’t just wear green, celebrate by GOING GREEN!  I’ve found some great going green resources to aid in your Irish Jiggin’, and Beer Drinkin’.

St. Paddy’s Day is all about celebrating the Irish culture, whether your ancestry dates back to the Emerald Isle, or you only consider yourself Irish on March 17th every year!  And what’s more Irish than beer?  While Guinness, Harp and Smithwicks are all commonly known Irish beers that go on sale at supermarkets and liquor stores this time of year, with opting for greener spirits, you should drink local beer instead!

Because That’s Caring is based in Chicago, I can speak from experience in promoting the following brands of beer brewed local in Chicago:

If you’re reading this post and aren’t located in Chicago, IL, I’ve stumbled across a couple websites that can locate beer companies and breweries that are closest to your area!

Brewers Association allows you to type in the state that you live on (or the state that you will be celebrating St. Patty’s day in) and a whole list of local beer companies will pop up!

If you’re interesting in supporting your local breweries beyond the St. Patrick’s Day excitement (which I highly encourage!), check out the Support Your Local Brewery Organization of Beer Activists.

Anyway you swallow it, supporting local business is one of the easiest ways to go green! So, don’t hold back this St. Patty’s Day in showing your green pride!

Drink Green.  Stay Green.

Go Green For Spring Break!

It’s that time of year again—where sitting in your office cubicle becomes more of a challenge by the day.  The smell of Spring Break is in the air!  Whether you’re off to the border or relaxing at home, we thought we’d offer up some going green tips and ideas for making your 2012 Spring Break environmentally friendly.

Planning your eco-friendly Spring Break:

  • Plan your Spring Break transportation wisely!  Before you look up airline tickets to your warm-weather destination, consider road tripping as a possible green travel alternativePacking your friends and family into a car is not only an adventure, but also an extremely cost effective way to travel.  Better yet, rent a hybrid car for your road trip!  It will reduce the carbon footprint of your vacation!
  • If you’ve already purchased your airplane tickets for Spring Break, don’t worry!  You can still make your Spring Break traveling greener by purchasing carbon offsets for your plane ticketsTerraPass is my favorite website to purchase carbon offsets from.  There are tons of different carbon offset packages to choose from, so if you decide to offset more than just your Spring Break traveling, you have plenty of options to go green!
  • Choose an eco-friendly Spring Break destination! This concept could involve renting a sustainable house or condo, opting to couch stay at a local establishment or local’s house, choosing low environmental impact activities to participate in and supporting the local scene of your Spring Break destination.
  • Take a “staycation”!  If a destination Spring Break is too expensive or not an option with your work schedule, opt for a relaxing getaway close to home.  It can be a really inexpensive, eco-friendly way to vacation too!  Check out a local restaurant you’ve never been to, or a tourist attraction you’ve always overlooked – make the most out of what you take for granted on a daily basis!

Before you leave for Spring Break:

  • Shut off your air conditioner and heater! These devices are the biggest energy wasters on average.  It’s important to shut them off and close your blinds, which will block the sun’s rays from increasing the temperature of your home when you return from your vacation.
  • Unplug all your appliances (lamps, computers, TV’s, phones, toasters, coffee makes, ect.).  When you leave energy wasters like these plugged in when they are not in use, you get phantom energy loss.  Meaning, any appliance that is off, but still plugged in, uses energy.
  • Pack light!  The lighter your luggage, the more fuel-efficient your car will be if you’re road tripping to your Spring Break destination.  Also, the less clothing you bring, cuts down on water waste when you do your post-vacation laundry!

While you’re on Spring Break:

  • Don’t use your hotel’s toiletry products! Most hotels don’t recycle those tiny plastic bottles when you’re through with them.  Help the environment by bringing your own bathroom products.
  • Party Green.  Make sure you’re ditching those Red Solo Cups and Glass bottles.  By drinking out of a plastic cup, you’re creating double the waste than you would by simply drinking out of a can or bottle.  Choosing aluminum cans over glass bottles is a simple way to green up your partying too.  Cans made from recycled aluminum only use 5% of the energy it takes to manufacture a new can – a much more efficient recycling process than that of glass bottles!
  • Reuse your towels!  Instead of having room service bring you a clean towel every morning, simply decline that service and make sure to hang your towels up to dry for the entire vacation.  This will reduce the water and energy needed to wash them on a daily basis!

These are just a handful of useful green tips to make your Spring Break and eco-friendly one!  If you have other green ideas, make sure to let us know so we can feature them on Grass Roots, the That’s Caring Facebook page and Twitter Feed!

Stay Green.

Root for The Green Team!

With Super Bowl XLVI fast approaching on February 5, 2012, it doesn’t matter if you’re wearing the colors of the New York Giants or the New England Patriots, you can always be on the Green Team!

On a day circulated around domestic beer bottles, paper plates and Super Bowl decorations; why not throw a Green Super Bowl Party?

Green Tip #1: Go Paperless

  • Send electronic NFL Super Bowl Party invitations.
  • Using sustainable serving wares is a great way to make your party green and still convenient and functional.  Chicago-based Solo Cup recently rolled out a line of eco-friendly plates, bowls and containers called Bare by Solo, which are made from compostable, renewable, or recyclable materials.
  • Don’t buy Super Bowl decorations you’ll use once and throw away, instead display NFL football jerseys, team shirts, hats, footballs and any sports paraphernalia you have hanging around the house. It sets the mood for football with zero waste!

Green Tip #2: Serve Green and Local Super Bowl Beverages

No Super Bowl party is complete without refreshments (beer)! So why not purchase beer from local breweries in your area?  Being from Chicago, here are some of my favorite local Chicago beer brands.

  • Goose Island is not only brewed locally, but also it is a brand of beer that promotes a sustainable lifestyle and has sustainable practices. All of its brewing facilities use renewable energy and the majority of its packaging is from local vendors who use recycled materials too.
  • Wild Blossom is Chicago’s first winery and Illinois’ only meadery on the Northern Illinois Wine Trail. The company uses local honey (produced from local honey bees that collect nectar from the prairies of Illinois and the sand dunes of Lake Michigan) and fruits.
  • For all you super Green fans, you can purchase a keg of beer and use glasses, not plastic cups!  This way, you don’t have to worry about any disposable party waste, just return the keg after your Green Super Bowl party.  It will get cleaned and refilled for the next user.

Green Tip #3: GREEN YOUR CLEAN UP

Going green means clean up without a lot of excess waste.  Throw away as little as possible!

  • If you used plastic utensils, you can hand wash them or even run them in your dishwasher. No need to throw them away. Better yet, just use regular silverware!
  • If you order pizza for your Super Bowl Party, did you know you could recycle the pizza box? Just tear off the greasy part and recycle the rest.
  • This green tip is applicable for everyday green living, not just for your eco-friendly Super Bowl Party clean up.  Purchase recycled paper towels, napkins and biodegradable trash bags.

Overall, the best part about hosting a green-friendly Super Bowl party, is that you don’t have to go out of your way to eliminate waste and make a difference.  There are plenty of simple, realistic options for turning your game day green!

Let us know how your green Super Bowl party went over with your friends and family!

Play Green.  Stay Green.
